The Best Coach Rants, Tirades, and Meltdowns ever recorded
You may have recently heard that Coors will be using last years infamous Dennis Green tirade in their next ad campaign. It’s an obvious choice. In fact, it’s what we thought it was. We watch sports for the athleticism, the intense drama, and most especially for the occasional gems we get when the coach blows a gasket. Here are some of the greatest meltdowns in coaching history, in no particular order. I did not include the great minor league meltdowns like Joe Mikulik and Phil Wellman because they’re so hammed up.
Just assume none of these are work safe. A few may be, but why risk it…
Dennis Green - The Bears are what we thought they were.
The lowly Cardinals were up 23-3 in the 4th quarter against the Chicago Bears, who were still undefeated in late October 2006 and went on to be the Superbowl runners-up. Apparently Green thought they were a good team, because the Cardinals blew that lead in a matter of minutes.
Jim Mora - Diddly Poo
Fall 1996: Mora leaves nothing left to guess about his feelings on the Saints falling to 2-6 after a loss to the Panthers. His colorful description for what his team couldn’t do will live in infamy, only to be surpassed 5 years later by Playoffs!
Jim Mora - PLAYOFFS?!?
The first 42 seconds set up the last 7 - making it one of the greatest soundbytes ever. It came in 2001 after the Colts dropped to 4-6
John Chaney tries to beat up Calipari
Chaney is chomping at the bit to beat the crap out of UMass bball coach John Calipari in the post game press conference shortly after the Minutemen beat Temple in their big A-10 rivalry. They made up later.
Bob Knight - Speech during practice
A player (or staffer) had some amazing gall to secretly record this; and if he thought to record it this particular time, that would suggest that Knight had gone off like this before. Of course, Knight gives plenty of material for tirades–but most of them have all the good stuff beeped out or not online. Another favorite is his continuous 30-second-long beeped rant about how reporters dwell on some “negative piece of shit” and “you don’t have to beep one single word of that”.
Lee Elia - Chicago fans
1983 - Elia’s second and final year managing the Cubs. Elia was feeling the pressure of their losing record with fans booing his team - and it was only April.
Earl Weaver - live on The Manager’s Corner
Not only does he pack every possible curse in under 2 minutes while live on the radio, but in this classic audio the Orioles manager gives relationship advice for Ms. Alice Sweet of Norfolk, VA.
and finally…
Hal McRae - best meltdown ever
All it takes is one stupid question.
“Now, put that in your ___ pipe and smoke it.”

Stumble it!

Love the Goose soundbyte–but he’s not a coach. The standard for players is much higher, what with your assortment of classic trashtalkers (Shannon Sharpe), immature kids (Chris Webber, Kellen Winslow Jr), and emotional wrecks (Ryan Leaf). Those 3 categories alone are worth their own blog posts.

At least, the Astros are going to know who they are….
The Astros are on a pace to lose 89 games, their most since 2000 and only their second losing season since 1991. Regardless of whether they make another late-season sprint to the finish line, they are a team that……
